 When the Solar System was formed, a cloud of gas was moving around its center.  This cloud later came into existence in the form of Sun and other planets.

 According to the law of indestructibility of angular momentum, all the objects should also rotate similar to the rotation of that cloud.  For the same reason, not only the Earth, all the planets and the Sun also rotate on their axis.
