How do we know the taste of something?

 Tongue gives us the sense of taste. The tongue is located inside the mouth. It is wider at the back and thinner at the front. It is made up of muscles. Its color is red. On looking at its upper surface, we see some granular bulges, which are called taste buds.

 These taste buds are made up of cells. Hair-like fibers come out from their upper end. These taste buds are of four types, through which we come to know about the four main tastes. Sweet, bitter, sour and salty.

 The front part of the tongue experiences sweet and salty taste. The back part gives a bitter taste and the side part gives a sour taste. The middle part of the tongue does not perceive any kind of taste, as taste buds are often absent at this place.

 To detect taste, some part of the food dissolves in saliva and activates the taste buds. There is also a chemical action by foods, which triggers nerve impulses. These impulses reach the taste center of the brain and begin to give the experience of taste. By recognizing these impulses, our brain gives us the knowledge of taste.
