How do ants walk in a line?
Ants have glands that release chemicals called pheromones. Through these they keep in touch with each other. Ants have two tentacles or antennae with which they do the job of smelling. When the queen ant goes out in search of food, it releases pheromones.
The other ants go after the queen ant, smelling it with their antennae. When the queen ant stops making a particular pheromone, the ants choose the new ant as the queen. Pheromones are used in many other situations. For example, if an ant is crushed, it releases a warning pheromone, which makes other ants ready to attack. Pheromones also tell which ant is part of which task force.
